Neer Dosa

Neer Dosa is a traditional South Indian crepe made from a thin batter of rice and coconut. The name “Neer Dosa” translates to “Water Dosa” in Kannada, referring to its watery consistency. It is light, delicate, and gluten-free, with a slightly tangy flavor. Neer Dosa is typically served with coconut chutney, sambar, or any other accompaniment of choice, making it a popular breakfast or snack option in Karnataka and coastal regions of South India.

Here’s a simple recipe to make Neer Dosa:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup rice (preferably Sona Masoori or any short-grain rice)
  • 1/2 cup fresh grated coconut (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed

Instructions:

  1. Wash the rice thoroughly and soak it in enough water for at least 4-5 hours or overnight.
  2. If using fresh grated coconut, soak it along with the rice.
  3. After soaking, drain the water from the rice (and coconut, if using) and transfer them to a blender.
  4. Add salt to taste and blend the rice to a smooth batter, adding water as needed. The consistency of the batter should be thin, similar to that of buttermilk.
  5. Once the batter is smooth, transfer it to a large mixing bowl.
  6. Heat a non-stick or cast-iron skillet (preferably a crepe pan) over medium heat.
  7. Once the pan is hot, pour a ladleful of the batter onto the center of the pan and quickly swirl the pan to spread the batter thinly in a circular motion. Neer Dosa should be thin and lace-like.
  8. Drizzle a few drops of oil around the edges of the dosa and let it cook for about 1-2 minutes until the edges start to lift up and the surface appears cooked.
  9. Gently lift the edges of the dosa using a spatula and fold it into half or roll it if desired. Neer Dosa is typically served folded or rolled.
  10. Remove the cooked Neer Dosa from the pan and transfer it to a serving plate.
  11. Repeat the process with the remaining batter, stirring the batter well before making each dosa to ensure even consistency.
  12. Serve Neer Dosa hot with coconut chutney, sambar, or any other accompaniment of your choice.

Enjoy the light and delicate flavor of Neer Dosa as a breakfast or snack option!
