Jaljeera

Jaljeera is a refreshing and flavorful Indian beverage known for its tangy and spicy taste. It’s typically served as a summer cooler and is popular across India. Here’s a detailed recipe to make Jaljeera at home:

Ingredients:

For Jaljeera Powder:

  • 2 tablespoons cumin seeds
  • 1 tablespoon whole black peppercorns
  • 1 tablespoon dry mango powder (amchur)
  • 1 teaspoon black salt (kala namak)
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground mint leaves (dried or fresh)
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander seeds
  • 1 teaspoon roasted cumin powder

For Jaljeera Drink:

  • 2 tablespoons Jaljeera powder (adjust to taste)
  • 4 cups chilled water
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Fresh mint leaves and coriander leaves
  • 2 Green Chillies
  • Ice cubes (optional)

Instructions:

  1. To make the Jaljeera powder, dry roast the cumin seeds and black peppercorns in a pan over medium heat until fragrant. Be careful not to burn them. Let them cool completely.
  2. Grind the roasted cumin seeds and black peppercorns along with dry mango powder, black salt, ground ginger, ground mint leaves, ground coriander seeds, and roasted cumin powder into a fine powder using a spice grinder or mortar and pestle. This is your homemade Jaljeera powder.
  3. Transfer the Jaljeera powder to an airtight container and store it in a cool, dry place for later use.
  4. To make the Jaljeera drink, Grind fresh Mint, Coriander leaves and Green chillies in a grinder.
  5. Take a large pitcher or jug. Add freshly ground Mint Coriander chutney and chilled water to it.
  6. Stir in the Jaljeera powder according to your taste preference. Start with 2 tablespoons and adjust as needed for more flavor.
  7. Squeeze the juice of one lemon into the Jaljeera drink and mix well.
  8. Add ice cubes to the pitcher if desired to make it even more refreshing.
  9. Garnish the Jaljeera drink with fresh mint leaves and coriander leaves for a burst of color and flavor.
  10. Stir the Jaljeera drink well before serving to ensure the spices are evenly distributed.
  11. Pour the Jaljeera into glasses and serve chilled.
