Chaat Masala

Chaat Masala is a tangy and flavorful spice blend used in Indian street food and snacks. Here’s a detailed recipe to make Chaat Masala at home:

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons amchur (dry mango powder)
  • 1 tablespoon cumin seeds
  • 1 tablespoon coriander seeds
  • 1 teaspoon black salt (kala namak)
  • 1 teaspoon dried mint leaves
  • 1 teaspoon ajwain (carom seeds)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black peppercorns
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions:

  1. Dry roast cumin seeds and coriander seeds in a pan over medium heat until they become fragrant. Be careful not to burn them.
  2. Once roasted, let the seeds cool down, then grind them into a fine powder using a spice grinder or mortar and pestle.
  3. In a bowl, mix together the ground cumin and coriander seeds with amchur, black salt, dried mint leaves, ajwain, black peppercorns, red chili powder, asafoetida, ground ginger, ground cloves, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg.
  4. Thoroughly mix all the ingredients until well combined.
  5. Taste the mixture and adjust the seasoning according to your preference. You can add more black salt for extra tanginess or more red chili powder for extra heat.
  6. Once mixed, store the Chaat Masala in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.

Chaat Masala adds a zesty and tangy flavor to various snacks like samosas, pakoras, fruit salads, and street foods like chaat. Sprinkle it over your favorite dishes just before serving for an extra burst of flavor.
