Cabbage Thoran


Cabbage Thoran is a traditional South Indian dish made with finely shredded cabbage, coconut, and spices. It’s a quick and flavorful side dish that pairs well with rice or roti. Here’s a simple recipe to make it:

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups finely shredded cabbage
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 1 green chili, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2-3 dry red chilies
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil or any cooking oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Heat coconut oil in a pan over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  2. Add cumin seeds, dry red chilies, and curry leaves. Sauté for a few seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add chopped green chili and shredded cabbage to the pan. Mix well.
  4. Add turmeric powder and salt. Stir to combine all the ingredients.
  5. Cover the pan and let the cabbage cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it becomes soft but still retains some crunchiness.
  6. Once the cabbage is cooked, add grated coconut to the pan. Mix well and cook for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend.
  7. Adjust salt if necessary and remove from heat.
  8. Serve hot as a side dish with rice or roti.
