Dahi wale Aloo

“Dahi wale Aloo” is a popular North Indian dish made with potatoes cooked in a spiced yogurt gravy. It’s a creamy, tangy, and flavorful dish that makes for a comforting meal. Here’s a simple recipe to make it:

Ingredients:

  • 4 medium-sized potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1 cup plain yogurt (curd)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit lengthwise
  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil in a pan or kadhai over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them crackle.
  2. Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  3. Add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies. Sauté for a minute until the raw smell disappears.
  4. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and oil starts separating from the mixture.
  5. Lower the heat and add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Mix well and cook for a minute.
  6. Add cubed potatoes to the masala mixture. Stir to coat the potatoes with the spices.
  7. Add salt and a little water (about 1/4 cup). Cover the pan and let the potatoes cook until they are tender, stirring occasionally. If needed, add more water to prevent sticking.
  8. Once the potatoes are cooked, reduce the heat to low and add whisked yogurt to the pan. Stir continuously to prevent curdling. Let it simmer for a few minutes until the gravy thickens.
  9. Sprinkle garam masala powder and garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
  10. Serve hot with chapati, paratha, or rice.

Dahi wale Aloo is a comforting dish with a creamy texture and a tangy taste from the yogurt. Enjoy!
