Matar Mushroom

Matar Mushroom is a flavorful vegetarian dish from Indian cuisine that combines fresh green peas (matar) and sliced mushrooms cooked in a rich, aromatic gravy. The dish typically involves sautéing onions, tomatoes, and spices to create a savory base, where the mushrooms and peas are simmered until tender. The blend of spices like cumin, turmeric, red chili powder, and garam masala infuses the dish with a balance of flavors. Often garnished with fresh coriander leaves, Matar Mushroom is enjoyed as a main course and pairs well with rice, naan, or roti due to its satisfying taste and versatility.

Here’s a simple recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 200 grams mushrooms, cleaned and sliced
  • 1 cup green peas (fresh or frozen)
  • 2-3 tablespoons oil or ghee
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped or pureed
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil or ghee in a pan or skillet over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  2. Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  3. Add ginger-garlic paste and green chili. Sauté for a minute until the raw aroma disappears.
  4. Put in the chopped tomatoes or tomato puree and cook until they become soft and the oil starts to separate from the masala.
  5. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala, and salt. Mix well and cook the spices for a couple of minutes.
  6. Add the sliced mushrooms and green peas to the pan. Stir well to coat them with the spice mixture.
  7. Cover the pan and let the mushrooms and peas cook on low-medium heat. Stir occasionally to ensure they cook evenly. If needed, sprinkle a little water to help cook the vegetables.
  8. Check for doneness. The mushrooms should be tender, and the peas should be cooked but still have a bite to them.
  9. Once cooked, garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
  10. Serve Matar Mushroom hot with rice, naan, or roti.

This dish has a delightful combination of flavors from the mushrooms, peas, and spices. Adjust the spice levels according to your taste. Enjoy your homemade Matar Mushroom!
