Potato Poriyal is a delicious South Indian dish made with potatoes, seasoned with spices, and finished with grated coconut. It’s often served as a side dish with rice and other main courses. Here’s a simple recipe to make Potato Poriyal:
Ingredients:
- 4 medium-sized potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 1 tablespoon oil (coconut oil preferred)
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon urad dal (black gram lentils)
- 1 teaspoon chana dal (split chickpeas)
- 1-2 green chilies, slit lengthwise
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 2 tablespoons grated coconut (fresh or desiccated)
- Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (for garnish, optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Potatoes:
- Peel the potatoes and cut them into small cubes. Rinse them under cold water to remove excess starch.
- Cook the Potatoes:
- Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
- Add urad dal and chana dal. Sauté until they turn golden brown.
- Add slit green chilies and curry leaves. Sauté for a few seconds.
- Add the cubed potatoes to the pan. Sprinkle turmeric powder and salt over the potatoes. Mix well to coat the potatoes with the spices.
- Cover the pan with a lid and let the potatoes cook on medium-low heat. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Cook until the potatoes are tender but not mushy. This usually takes about 10-15 minutes.
- Finish the Dish:
- Once the potatoes are cooked, add grated coconut to the pan. Mix well to combine.
- Cook for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Turn off the heat and transfer the Potato Poriyal to a serving dish.
- Garnish and Serve:
- Garnish with chopped fresh coriander leaves, if desired.
- Serve hot as a side dish with rice and any South Indian main course like sambar or rasam.
Enjoy your delicious Potato Poriyal as part of a comforting South Indian meal!
