Potato Poriyal

Potato Poriyal is a delicious South Indian dish made with potatoes, seasoned with spices, and finished with grated coconut. It’s often served as a side dish with rice and other main courses. Here’s a simple recipe to make Potato Poriyal:

Ingredients:

  • 4 medium-sized potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1 tablespoon oil (coconut oil preferred)
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon urad dal (black gram lentils)
  • 1 teaspoon chana dal (split chickpeas)
  • 1-2 green chilies, slit lengthwise
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 2 tablespoons grated coconut (fresh or desiccated)
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (for garnish, optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Potatoes:
    • Peel the potatoes and cut them into small cubes. Rinse them under cold water to remove excess starch.
  2. Cook the Potatoes:
    • Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
    • Add urad dal and chana dal. Sauté until they turn golden brown.
    • Add slit green chilies and curry leaves. Sauté for a few seconds.
    • Add the cubed potatoes to the pan. Sprinkle turmeric powder and salt over the potatoes. Mix well to coat the potatoes with the spices.
    • Cover the pan with a lid and let the potatoes cook on medium-low heat. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Cook until the potatoes are tender but not mushy. This usually takes about 10-15 minutes.
  3. Finish the Dish:
    • Once the potatoes are cooked, add grated coconut to the pan. Mix well to combine.
    • Cook for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
    • Turn off the heat and transfer the Potato Poriyal to a serving dish.
  4. Garnish and Serve:
    • Garnish with chopped fresh coriander leaves, if desired.
    • Serve hot as a side dish with rice and any South Indian main course like sambar or rasam.
