Tadka Dahi or Tempered Yogurt is a delightful Indian dish where yogurt is flavored with a tempering of spices and herbs. Here’s a detailed recipe for preparing Tadka Dahi:
Ingredients:
- 2 cups plain yogurt (curd)
- 1 tablespoon oil or ghee
- 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1-2 dry red chilies (broken into pieces)
- A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
- 5-6 curry leaves
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
- Salt to taste
- Chopped coriander leaves for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Yogurt Base:
- Take plain yogurt in a mixing bowl and whisk it well until smooth. Add a little water if the yogurt is too thick. Keep it aside.
- Tempering (Tadka):
- Heat oil or ghee in a small pan over medium heat.
- Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Then add cumin seeds and allow them to crackle.
- Add broken dry red chilies, asafoetida, and curry leaves. Stir for a few seconds until the spices release their aroma. Be careful not to burn them.
- Adding Spices:
- Reduce the heat to low and add turmeric powder and red chili powder to the tempering mixture. Quickly stir to prevent the spices from burning.
- Mixing with Yogurt:
- Take the pan off the heat and let it cool for a few seconds.
- Pour this tempering (tadka) over the whisked yogurt. Add salt to taste.
- Mix Well:
- Gently mix the tempered spices into the yogurt until well combined.
- Garnish and Serve:
- Optionally, garnish the Tadka Dahi with chopped coriander leaves.
- Serve it as a side dish with your main meal or as a refreshing accompaniment to complement spicy dishes.
Tadka Dahi adds a burst of flavors to your meal and can be served alongside rice, roti, or as a cooling element to balance the heat of other dishes. Adjust the spice levels according to your preference and enjoy the tangy, tempered goodness of Tadka Dahi!
