This dish is perfect for those who enjoy bold flavors and is often served as a side dish with rice or bread.

Here’s a simple recipe for Mutton Pepper Fry:

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams mutton (goat meat), cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 tablespoons oil (preferably coconut oil)
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit lengthwise
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro leaves for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil in a pressure cooker or a heavy-bottomed pan over medium heat.
  2. Add cumin seeds and fennel seeds to the hot oil and sauté for a few seconds until they start to sizzle.
  3. Add chopped onions and green chilies to the pan and sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
  4. Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and cook for another couple of minutes until the raw smell disappears.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes to the pan and cook until they turn mushy and the oil starts to separate from the mixture.
  6. Now, add the mutton pieces to the pan along with turmeric powder, freshly ground black pepper, and salt to taste. Mix well to coat the mutton pieces evenly with the spices.
  7. Cook the mutton for a few minutes until it starts to brown slightly.
  8. If using a pressure cooker, add about 1/2 to 1 cup of water, depending on the desired consistency of the gravy, and pressure cook the mutton until it is tender. If using a pan, add water as needed, cover the pan, and simmer until the mutton is cooked and tender, stirring occasionally.
  9. Once the mutton is cooked, check for seasoning and adjust salt and pepper according to taste.
  10. Garnish the Mutton Pepper Fry with fresh cilantro leaves and serve hot with steamed rice, roti, or paratha.
