Masala Papad


Masala Papad is a delightful Indian appetizer or snack made with a thin, crispy papad topped with a spicy and tangy mixture of peanuts, veggies and spices. Here’s a detailed recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 4-5 papads (any variety like urad dal, moong dal, etc.)
  • 1/2 cup roasted peanuts..
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 small tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 small cucumber, finely chopped
  • 1 small capsicum (bell pepper), finely chopped
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped (optional)
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped
  • Chaat masala, to taste
  • Red chili powder, to taste
  • Black salt, to taste
  • Lemon juice, as needed
  • Sev or crushed papdi (optional, for garnish)
  • Oil for shallow frying

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Veggies:
    • Finely chop the onion, tomato, cucumber, capsicum, green chili, and coriander leaves. Keep them ready in separate bowls.
  2. Prepare the Papads:
    • Heat a skillet or tawa over low-medium heat.
    • Add a drop of oil and place a papad on the skillet. Lightly roast it on both sides until it turns crispy. Be cautious as papads cook quickly.
    • Repeat this for all the papads and set them aside.
  3. Prepare the Masala Mixture:
    • In a mixing bowl, combine the roasted peanuts, chopped onion, tomato, cucumber, capsicum, green chili, and coriander leaves.
    • Add chaat masala, red chili powder, black salt, and a splash of lemon juice. Mix everything well to combine. Adjust seasoning according to taste.
  4. Assemble the Masala Papad:
    • Place the roasted papads on serving plates.
    • Spoon the prepared masala mixture evenly over each papad, spreading it out to cover the surface.
  5. Garnish and Serve:
    • Optionally, sprinkle some sev or crushed papdi on top of the masala mixture for added crunch and flavor.
    • Serve the Masala Papads immediately as an appetizer or snack.
