Kala Chana Chaat

Kala Chana Chaat is a tangy and flavorful Indian salad made with black chickpeas (kala chana) combined with assorted spices and fresh ingredients. Here’s how you can prepare it:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dried kala chana (black chickpeas), soaked overnight or for 6-8 hours
  • 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped
  • 1 large tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 cup cucumber, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup fresh coriander leaves (cilantro), chopped
  • 1 small lemon, juiced
  • 1 teaspoon chaat masala
  • 1/2 teaspoon roasted cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • Salt to taste
  • Tamarind chutney or green chutney (optional)
  • Sev (crunchy fried chickpea flour noodles) for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Boiling Kala Chana: Rinse the soaked kala chana and cook it in a pressure cooker or pot with enough water and a little salt until they are tender. It might take around 20-30 minutes. Separate excess water and keep the cooked chana aside. Remaining water can be used to make Chana soup.
  2. Preparing the Chaat: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked kala chana, chopped onions, tomatoes, green chili, cucumber, and fresh coriander leaves.
  3. Seasoning: Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the mixture. Add chaat masala, roasted cumin powder, red chili powder, and salt. Toss everything well to coat evenly.
  4. Optional Additions: You can add a drizzle of tamarind chutney or green chutney for extra tanginess and flavor.
  5. Garnish and Serve: Garnish the chaat with some sev on top for an added crunch. Serve the Kala Chana Chaat immediately as a refreshing and flavorful snack.
